Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m employed in the telecommunications clearing and settlement industry. In my free time, when I’m not working or doing Yoga, I enjoy listening to music, watching movies, and visiting museums.
What brought you to the Bikram yoga practice?
I saw a story about Bikram Yoga on the news. I was intrigued so I came in for the 10 day trial. I was hooked after my first class, and I’ve been coming back ever since.
How often do you practice?
When I did the Bikram 60 day challenge I was practicing every day. Now my practice is 5-6 days a week.
What specific physical issues, if any, did you have before taking your first class?
I experienced knee pain when I would squat that has since gone away thanks to the Yoga. Other than that I didn’t have any physical issues; however, after having experience with each posture I soon realized I had tightness in areas such as my hips, lower back, and neck. I also found that I needed improvement in my balance. I have seen positive change in those areas now that I’ve been doing Bikram Yoga.
What are the greatest benefits of your practice?
The greatest benefit for me is having established a disciplined practice. Before Yoga I had a gym membership, and I would go sporadically, but it was difficult to keep motivated. With Bikram Yoga it’s different– there is an energy in the room during class that you just don’t get in other programs–and all the teachers provide such great instruction; it’s like having a personal trainer in every class. It’s the quality of instruction and group energy that keeps me coming back.
How has this practice changed your health and life? Any emotional or other benefits?
Increased endurance, greater strength and flexibility, and improved focus. One thing I’ve noticed is that the focused mindfulness needed to maintain a posture in Yoga is a skill that can be applied outside the studio. When I need to get something done I can really zero in on it and get it accomplished. I’ve also noticed I have less stress, I go with the flow more, and it’s easier to enjoy the present moment.
What is your favorite part of Bikram yoga?
That feeling of accomplishment at the end of class. In the final Savasana I can feel all the benefits flowing through my body. Each day the Yoga gets better and better.
